Riverside Church Expansion Gives Kids a Place to Play

EKB Masonry is busy putting the finishing touches on a new gymnasium for the Riverside Presbyterian Church and its associated school. The new facility includes more than 24,000 concrete masonry units (CMUs), more commonly referred to as concrete blocks, and more than 60,000 brick joints. To match existing buildings on the campus, EKB masons used raked joints instead of struck brick joints. Raked joints require the masons to “rake” out approximately ¼” of the mortar between joints. Additionally, every 2 vertical feet along the facility walls and brick entrance arch are recessed ½” to match existing building facades on the campus. Construction of the entire project will only take 3 months from beginning to end.
